History

The three acres of land on which the cemetery lies was originally part of a patent granted to Colonel William Smith by King William III in 1693 (known as the Manor of St. George). Subsequent to the Revolutionary War 100 years later, the land became part of Brookhaven Township. Corporal David Carter was granted ownership of a large plot of land East of Wading River Road.

Within the Carter land holding was the family cemetery (now Brookfield Cemetery). The earliest recorded burial is Benjamin Laws in 1798. Mr. Laws was a Carter relative.

In 1942, John Herbert Carter, grandson of Silas Carter, conveyed the cemetery parcel for public use as a burial ground, and Brookfield Cemetery was incorporated in 1943.
